How to become a Licensed Security Officer in Virginia

Becoming a security guard is a career that is in demand.  Virginia security companies like  ours  are flooded with applications daily.  One way a job applicant can stand out above the rest is getting a security license (registration).  When compared to the licensing process for Washington DC and Maryland the Virginia security guard licensing process is terrific.  Unlike the surrounding jurisdictions, security officers in VA do not need to be sponsored by security companies. In Virginia, each security guard owns their license and are responsible for keeping it current.  The process of becoming a licensed security officer in Virginia is relatively straightforward.

First, let us clarify some terms.

Security Registration – What most people would refer to as a Virginia security license is called a security registration.

Armed registered officer – There is no such thing as an armed security license.  Armed security guards in Virginia are armed registered security officers.  Armed registration is achieved by adding an armed endorsement to your security officer registration.

Who regulates security services in Virginia?

Security and law enforcement are regulated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).  DCJS is a civilian agency.  Its staff is not law enforcement officers.  Most other states place security licensing under the control of law enforcement. Law enforcement agencies priority is catching bad guys.  As a result, most states that have license processes that are managed by law enforcement agencies tend to have less staff and tend to have systems that are overly complicated.  Security officer registration in Virginia is under the direct control of the Private Security Services Office of the DCJS Division of Regulatory Affairs .  They can run behind sometimes.  However, their system is user-friendly and easy to understand.  If you have a question, they answer their phone, and you can even check the status of your application online.

Steps to getting your Virginia security registration (license)

Step 1. Submit an application and fingerprints

To start the process of getting your security license, you must submit an initial registration application and fingerprint processing application  along with a check or money order for $75.00.  Mail these to DCJS PO Box 1300 Richmond, Va  23218.  You can get fingerprints by contacting a local security training academy or police station.  Call them and ask them when they process fingerprints.  They typically charge a fee of $15 -$25.

You can track the status of your application online by going here https://www.cms.dcjs.virginia.gov/GLSuiteWeb/Clients/VADCJS/Public/ApplicationStatus/Search.aspx .  You can also call them 8882418183.

After completing the initial processing of your application, DCJS will send you a letter that can be used as a temporary license.  This allows you to work as you complete your training and wait to receive your registration in the mail.

Step 2. Get training

Now it’s time to get training. After submitting your application, you have 90 days to complete your training.   All registered security officers must pass the 01E Security Officer Core Subjects Entry Level Course.  The course is 18 hours and is full of helpful information to introduce you to the world of professional security services.  One of the training academies that we recommend is D&D security training academy .  Go to the following page to search for security training academies near you . (Note: Select school in the license type section and enter your zip code and click search)

After you complete the course, the school will submit your class results to DCJS.

Step 3. Wait for your registration (license) to arrive

After you have submitted your application and completed all that remains is waiting to receive your license in the mail and getting hired by a Virginia security company. There are plenty of companies providing security service in VA that would love to hire a professional security officer. You typically receive your card about 30 days after you have submitted your application and completed the training.
